Our Story
The Indian Ocean Tsunami that struck South Asia on December 26, 2004 left:

• 30,959 dead
• 5,563 missing
• Over a million affected in other ways such as displacement from homes.

The spontaneous and generous contributions made by the public in Sri Lanka and the world allowed local and international NGO’s, Civil Society and Individuals to engage themselves effectively in the relief work in Sri Lanka.
The personal stories of anguish and loss that were told in some of the tsunami affected areas in the immediate aftermath of the disaster inspired the establishment of a formal charity.

In February 2005, The Sunshine Charity was established with the aim of providing both short-term and long-term support to children. In April 2006, the construction of a permanent day care centre to look after 25 children between the ages of 2 and 6 in Sambalthivu, Trincomalee, was completed. The children of The Sunshine Day Care Centre are provided with learning facilities, child care, nutritious meals, and together with other children from the community, have the opportunity to partake regularly in creative and interactive workshops.

The Sunshine Charity Day Care Centre in Sambalthivu is managed in partnership with The Grace Education Care Centre of Uppaveli, Trincomalee. It’s Director, the Rev. Jeyakanth has many years of experience in caring for children and in the managing of children’s homes. Having worked with children during the long years of conflict and more recently in the aftermath of the Tsunami it is fortunate that The Sunshine Charity has an organization working in the area to partner with.
